Kala S Sridhar is Professor, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bengaluru, India. She has authored and edited several books published out of Oxford University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Springer, and Sage. She has written refereed journal articles in international journals of high repute such as Regional Science and Urban Economics, Urban Studies, Review of Urban and Regional Development Studies (RURDS), China Economic Review, and chapters in edited books on urban issues. She is a regular contributor of columns to India’s leading financial dailies. She has won several international and national awards for her research on urbanization including the highly competitive Global Development Network medal for outstanding research on development, two times. She has been a member of expert committees on urban development, and has done extensive research for the Asian Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank Institute. She is empanelled to be visiting Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Chair Professor of Indian Studies (Economics) in foreign universities. She was a member, Scientific Committee of the Urban Transitions 2016 Conference, co-hosted by Yale University and Elsevier, which was held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, in September 2016. She is a member of the Research Councils UK-India’s National Institute of Urban Affairs joint network on sustainable cities and urbanization.
Kala has several Ph.D. students working under her guidance on various aspects of urban research including urban poverty, transport, finances and start-ups. She is an external examiner for Ph.D. theses of other prestigious institutions across the country such as the Indian Institute of Science, CEPT University, and the University of Calcutta. She is in the top 10% of authors on the Social Science Research Network. She has a Ph.D. in Public Policy & Management, from The Ohio State University, USA, and a M.S., Urban & Regional Planning, from The University of Iowa, USA.
